Creating a Morning Routine That Sets You Up For Success

Tricia Gehl, Boon Coach

Most of us are on autopilot each morning, letting what we need to accomplish solely drive our set of steps and activities. Although we know that starting each day with a routine that best serves us creates a strong foundation, sharpens our focus, and boosts motivation, we rarely take the time to reflect on what we truly need. With January being Mental Wellness Month, now might be the perfect time to reassess your morning routine to see if you’re giving yourself the best start each day.

What Do You Need?
I really want to be more productive every day. I also enjoy a slow, leisurely start to my days, preferring to sit quietly, drink a few cups of tea, and read a few chapters of whatever book I’m in the middle of before I start seeing clients. Although the latter is what I enjoy, I’ve found that it doesn’t always set me up for the productivity I’m looking for. Anchoring my morning with that lovely leisure time usually leads to a lot of procrastination. More often than not I choose tea and a book over quickly unloading the dishwasher or throwing in a load of laundry. However, on mornings I start the day with a rowing class, I’m more likely to take action on easy to-do’s before sitting down with tea and my book. I need that morning workout class to truly set me up for the productive day I’m aiming for. For me, that one anabolic decision to attend a morning rowing class leads to more anabolic decisions throughout my day. Take some time to figure out what you truly need each morning to set yourself up for success (that’s YOUR definition of success!) throughout the day.

Take Notice
Journaling is an easy way to see what patterns, themes, or commonalities show up throughout any given week. Notice that on the days you skipped your morning workout class you also felt a significant dip in energy in the afternoon? Finding that you’ve consistently struggled to remain patient and present on the days you bypassed your 15 minute morning meditation? Are you realizing that you’re more open and communicative when you schedule sessions with your Boon coach first thing in the morning instead of in the afternoon? Pay attention to your findings and make the necessary adjustments needed to start your day off on the right foot.

Try, Then Try Again
We won’t always get it right. There are going to be mornings where it’s necessary to deviate from your normal, success-boosting routine based on what life throws your way. There are also going to be mornings where you just want to stay in bed and choose to do just that. The trick is to not give up! One missed opportunity doesn’t equal failure. Make a conscious effort to get yourself back on track the next morning you’re able. Need some help creating and sticking to your ideal morning routine? Be sure to bring it up during your next Boon coaching session!
